This show was made to sell toys to a young generation. yes. BUT it was also made so that parents could watch this show WITH their kids. Naturally if made like this and made well, it will generate fans of all ages. Lauren Faust was a execute producer for the first 2 seasons. She knows how to make good shows. she has been working on The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Two good shows which can be watched in any age really.

It is way different from many kid cartoons like Dora the explorer. Just like animaniacs it it made to be a good show for everyone and not just the kids. The reason why MLP is so big is because of it being a good show and of course because of the internet.

But with hating on shows that are made for kids, i guess you are hating pretty much any superhero, pokemon, spongebob and many many others.

Had this show not had the name, been made with humans, stuff like that. All of this hate without knowledge would be reduced by bit amounts.
